Choosing the right school has just become a whole lot easier

As a parent, one of the most important decisions you will make is about where to send your child to school - but how educated will your decision be?

Frustrated with the lack of resources available, some Brisbane mothers have embarked on a not for profit project to bring parents together in an online environment to help them make an informed decision about their child’s education.

Educated Guess a not for profit community platform!

Trish Simpson, founder of Educated Guess, said parents are no longer looking simply at a school’s academic profile or its locality when making this important decision.

"As a parent I wanted to get a feeling for the style of teaching, the school’s culture and most importantly how other parents and their kids felt about their school before enrolling my daughter. But short of sitting at the school gate and asking a parent passing by, I had no way to access that sort of information," said Simpson.

"That’s why we’ve established Educated Guess – a resource created by parents for parents, where you can get answers to the questions you really want to ask," she said.
Whilst it is early stages of development, the site already provides a search engine of all Australian schools, a national and individual schools forum for parents to ask or answer questions, and a survey to be completed by users to rate their child's current school. The survey information is then used to determine a rating for each school - a rating that has been based on parents’ views of 12 criteria across areas that have not before been measured by educational institutions.

"Criteria like teacher quality, safety and discipline, and student conduct are surveyed, so parents can get a better idea about prospective schools not simply basing their decision on a school's academic record," said Simpson.

"As a tool, the survey information will be a particularly powerful resource, but we really need the help of parents and schools to start the ball rolling," she said.

"We are asking parents to log on and complete a survey profiling their children’s school, leave a comment on the school forum or even add school information".
When our kids are happy - they will enjoy learning and excel, when they are not happy, their learning ability suffers.
